Plateau Mountain is a prominent landmark in south western Alberta between the Livingstone Range to the west and the prairie to the east. It is a genuine plateau about eight kilometres long and one to two kilometres wide and almost completely flat. Technically it qualifies as a nunatak, an area of high land that stood above the ice sheet during the last ice age. Its broad wind-swept summit hosts some unusual wildflowers and geological features. Although it has almost no trees, it provides important grazing for a number of wildlife species. To the visitor the plateau can feel like arctic tundra, quite different to the alpine and subalpine to the west, and the prairie to the east. Plateau Mountain was declared an Ecological Reserve in 1991. It is a unique place.

This is a chance to see Plateau Mountain in some detail. We will be covering the climb to the top of the ridge by mountain bike and the rest on foot. The views from the top are spectacular.

AWA has been a volunteer Steward for the Plateau Mountain Ecological Reserve under Alberta Parks’ Stewardship program since 2001 and regularly undertakes volunteer trips to perform monitoring and upkeep work within the reserve. Information from Stewards’ site inspection reports is used to update Alberta Parks’ site database and informs local management decisions. In its role as a Steward for Plateau Mountain, AWA has amassed considerable knowledge about the area and its natural features. This Adventure will also serve as a monitoring trip and offers participants the opportunity to partake in stewardship of one of Alberta's most interesting protected areas.

Things To be Aware Of

Plateau Mountain has unpredictable weather, be prepared for the possibility of strong winds and/or heavy rain.

The meeting place will be provided to registrants a few days before the event.

We will be cycling the road to the top of Plateau Mountain from the trailhead/gate. It is 4.3 km long with a 230 m elevation gain. Small portions of this are quite rough and might need to be walked. Once at the top we will travel on foot to see specific points of interest.

The pace of the day will by slow to moderate
