This is a chance see the autumn colours of The Whaleback in Southern Alberta. Grasses and aspen trees turn different shades and can be seen against the backdrop of the high mountains to the west. A truly unique place.

The Whaleback is a distinctive wild landscape in Southern Alberta, the bridge between the prairie and the high mountains of the Livingstone Range. It has grasslands, aspen groves, Douglas fir forests and remarkable limber pines. This hike will explore the ridges as the grasses and aspens begin to turn shades of gold and ochre.

Hiking poles are useful for off trail ascents and descents

Things To be Aware Of

The first and last parts of the hike are along a trail on the valley floor. The rest involves climbing, traversing and descending ridges where there are no trails. The off-trail walking is mostly in thick grass which can be tiring.
Some experience of hiking is helpful and a good level of fitness is necessary.

Meeting place - SE portion of Anderson Road LRT station parking lot. We will car pool from the parking lot. It is almost a 2 hour drive to the trailhead.

Meeting time - 8.30am

For anyone wishing to drive directly to the trailhead we can meet you at 10.00 am at the staging area for Bob Creek Wildland Provincial Park
