Jumpingpound Summit trail offers a great mountain escape that is friendly to hikers of all abilities, ages, and species. This accessible hike offers a lunch among wildflowers on the sun-drenched summit and savouring the beauty of woods, creeks, and all things wild along the way. Join us for a memorable half day of re-creating with friends, including of the furry variety, in some of Alberta's most beautiful scenery.
The out-and-back trail is about 6.3 km long with a steady 414 m elevation gain. The trailhead is located off Powderface Trail (dirt road south of Hwy 1 and Sibbald Creek Road) about 1.5 hours from Calgary. Plan on a half-day to hike with time to enjoy the views at the top (although the speedy group may only need 2-3 hours of hiking total!). The majority of the route is sheltered by trees, so plenty of shade for furry friends. The summit area is more exposed to weather- namely sunshine and sometimes quite strong and chilly wind. The most demanding terrain of the day will be handled by your vehicle...Powderface Trail is quite bumpy, narrow at points, and can be difficult in wet conditions.
We will observe COVID-19 precautions and guidance from the Government of Alberta and expect
participants to follow appropriate sanitizing and social distancing. We thank you for your understanding
and cooperation! If you need more details you can check the Government website at:
this link.
Please bring a personal mask and your own hand sanitizer.
Thank you for joining us for this exceptional day out in one of Alberta’s truly wonderful Wild Spaces
— we look forward to meeting you there!
There are no restroom facilities at the trailhead. If needed, I'd recommend stopping at the rustic (no running water) Dawson Equestrian Campground which is off of Powderface Trail shortly after turning from Sibbald Creek Trail.
As you have probably gathered, there will be at least one furry friend (of the black lab variety) joining our hike. Humans without doggos are welcome— but humans who have a fear of dogs may wish to choose another adventure.
Due to the off-road access to the trailhead, if this spring is particularly wet we may need to revise or reschedule the adventure.
Meeting times and locations will be shared with registered participants in advance of the event.
If we end up with more people than can reasonably travel in a single group, we plan to split up into smaller groups, based on skill level and speed, etc. so that we can ensure proper social distancing.
